School in Wijnendale: natural building materials create a pleasant learning environment
In the centre of Wijnendale, Scholengroep Sint-Rembert has built a new primary school that adds value in terms of both functionality and urban planning. The school comprises two buildings: a sports hall on the church square and a school building housing a nursery and a primary school, centred around a playground. The division and location have been carefully tailored to the scale of the surroundings and the wishes of local residents.
In addition to the ramifications for urban planning, considerable emphasis was placed on sustainability. The chosen building materials and the use of natural light contribute to a pleasant learning environment. The integration of green spaces and the connection with the surrounding landscape create a school environment that is functional, inspiring and future-proof. GVB Wijnendale is therefore more than just a new primary school; it is an example of how educational infrastructure can create added spatial and social value within a village centre.

ThermoWood® ayous, fire retardant treated
ThermoWood® ayous, a durable, thermally modified wood without knots and with a warm, natural appearance, was chosen for the cladding. Ayous comes from sustainably managed forests.
To meet the strict fire safety regulations for schools, ThermoWood® ayous was fire retardant treated to the required reaction to fire class by Lemahieu Fire Protection®. The fire retardant, Burnblock® is 100% natural and pressure-impregnated into the ThermoWood®.
In this way, the project combines an aesthetically and environmentally friendly facade with maximum fire safety - ideal for a future-oriented learning environment.
