The story of the rhino and the bird

You’ll probably have already noticed that virtually every form of communication emanating from LDCwood® features a line drawing of a rhino with a bird on its back. But what’s the story behind this visual? And what does it have to do with thermally preserved timber from LDCwood®?

Unusual pairings in nature

In nature, you can find a number of “odd couples” that, at first glance, appear to have very little in common. Take ostriches and zebras, for example. The former has poor eyesight but can smell incredibly well while the latter has decent eyesight but a limited sense of smell. Working together, they can escape the clutches of predators.

Another relationship based on mutual benefit and appreciation of each other’s skills is seen in the rhinoceros and the cattle egrets. The white birds also stay with the rhino as it feeds. They eat the ticks and do not go beyond that. They ride on the back of the animals to feed on any insects. Unlike the oxpecker, the cattle egrets are only tick feeders.

They give mutual benefits to the rhino by protecting it from danger. When there is an enemy on the horizon, the bird flies up and makes a noise. This will tip off the animal to scamper to a hide-out. Here, no species benefits more than the other.
